In 1682, Quakers William and George Harmer emigrated to Pennsylvania. They purchased a 408-acre tract from William Penn in 1716, an area including most of what now is Ambler Borough. William Harmer built the first commercial venture in the area - a grist mill powered by the Wissahickon Cree. As of the census of 2010, there were 6,417 people living in the borough.
